Introduction

The lodge can host up to 20 guests in 10 chalets and rooms, many of which include a small veranda with camping chairs and views of the river, while others overlook a grassy plain with a watering hole. These comfortable accommodations are perfect for those looking for a cost-effective option in the Sabi Sand.

All rooms are en-suite and air-conditioned, with some configured for families or small groups of friends, featuring connected but separate rooms. Umkumbe offers three Standard rooms and seven Superior rooms, with the latter being more spacious and equipped with outdoor en-suite showers.

Day 1

Day 1 Johannesburg to the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve

You will be collected from the Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport bus terminal by 07:00am and travel east via the N4 motorway through the Highveld of Gauteng and Mpumalanga, down the escarpment and into the scenic Lowveld to the reserve inside the Greater Kruger National Park.

The drive will take about six hours, during which you will stop for refreshments. After reaching the lodge around mid-day, you will have the opportunity to freshen up and relax before departing on an open safari vehicle for your first afternoon game drive in the reserve.

Back at the lodge a delicious starlit dinner will await you, weather permitting.

Day 2 Morning and Afternoon Safari Drives

You will get an early wake-up call and just have time for a hot beverage and rusks before departing on a 3-hour game drive to see the sun rising in the east.

On return you can enjoy a brunch and choose to spend the rest of the day at the pool or lazing around before it is time for an afternoon game drive with an expert guide, to return in time for another dinner under the stars.

Accommodation is comfortable and suitable for those looking for a value for money option in the Sabi Sand. All rooms are en-suite and airconditioned. Some rooms are set up to allow families or small parties of three friends with separate but connected rooms.

Day 3

Day 3 Sabi Sand Game Reserve Safari Drives

Enjoy a warm beverage before departing the lodge on an early morning safari drive. Your guide and tracker will spend time following up on spoor (animal foot prints) from the previous night, locating the animal movements and hoping to find members of the big 5. Return to the lodge for breakfast and spend the heat of the day in your accommodation.

You will meet your guide in the late afternoon after enjoying lunch before departing on an afternoon safari drive that returns back to the lodge after dark less has fallen, just in time for dinner.

Most of the ten chalets and rooms overlook the seasonal Sand River offering you unlimited sights of elephant, hippo, buffalo and antelope grazing in the riverbed.
